Ethnomathematics

The goal of this presentation is to broaden the scope of how mathematics can be used. Historically the information has been presented from a narrow frame of western culture. As an example of how there is meaning for mathematics within other cultures I will focus on the history of Native American and African tribes. It is the attempt to challenge the assumption that our western culture’s use of mathematics is more sophisticated or shows greater intelligence. Mathematics merely reflects the cultural need of a society. It is continually adapted through time by the culture at hand.

The Case Study of Brother and Sister

This case study is on a two siblings, brother and sister. We are observing and evaluating where they are at in five different domains; cognitive development, physical development, identity development, social development, and moral development. We have been conducting interviews with the participants and their parents over the past couple of months. Also observing them in school and/or athletic activities to see how they interact with their peers. We will be showing where they are developmentally and also sharing how they affect each other’s development.

Men and Women’s Olympic Hurdles Events

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics was the first of the games which women competed in the 400m hurdler race. Previously, women only competed in the 100m hurdles race. For the purpose of this report, data will be analyzed from 1984 to 2012. In the interest of understanding the elements that indict success in hurdles events, we will research data on men’s 110m hurdles, men’s 400m hurdles, women’s 100m hurdles and women’s 400m hurdles.
