Cryptography: From Expanding an Empire to Winning World War II

This research looks at how mathematics, through cryptography, has affected our world history. From expanding an empire to possibly winning World War II, codes and ciphers have played an important role in world history. In general, the basics and key terms of cryptography are explained here, as well as example ciphers. One cipher explored here is the Caesar cipher. The creation, use and weaknesses of this easily broken, simple cipher are discussed. The Enigma, a far more complex code, is also discussed. This research looks at the creation and use of the Enigma and how, through mathematicians’ work, cracking the Enigma may have affected the outcome of World War II.

The Effects of Physical Activity on Learning

Exercise may be beneficial in the learning process by helping students focus on the task at hand. The following study was conducted to determine if physical activity before a math test would help improve scores. Students from an introductory psychology class at Northwest Christian University were recruited. The participants were split into two groups. One group was asked to walk for ten minutes, and the other was asked to rest quietly in the room for ten minutes. After this, they were given a ten question high school level math test. The hypothesis was those that went for a walk would perform at a higher level in answering math problems than those who did not walk.

Two Truths and a Lie: Deception Detection Based on Mode of Communication

Lies can often be exchanged through text based communication and face to face communication. The following study was conducted to determine if lies were detected more often through face-to-face or text-based communication and whether not it mattered if the participant knew the researcher well. The first hypothesis was that when the participant does not know the deceiver, deception detection will succeed more often through text-only communication than face-to-face communication. The second hypothesis was that when the participant does know the deceiver well, successful deception detection will be equally likely in face-to-face and text-only communication. Twenty-seven participants from Northwest Christian University participated in a game of Two Truths and a Lie, once face-to-face and once over text message. The results show that there was not a significant difference between face-to-face detection and the text based detection. Also, in either medium, there was a not significant difference in lie detection between participants who knew the researcher well, or did not know the researcher well.

Stress and Break-ups

Stress after a break up will occur in almost any circumstance. This study was conducted to measure stress after a break up based on frequency of interaction. The hypothesis was higher stress level would be positively correlated to more interaction. A survey was given to people at NCU and U of O, which asked to report on their stress level after a break up. The results showed almost no difference in the stress based on interaction but showed a significant difference in stress levels based on gender. The results showed proximity does not have a factor in stress level after a break up.

Social Media Use by College Students

Social media has become very popular around the world. Social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram are used very often & have become a big part of people’s lives, especially college student’s lives. This project examines the social networking among college students. The data will be collected through a survey & then analyzed using statistical methods in excel. The results will be compared to other results found online regarding the same topic. This survey will be conducted during spring semester & participants for the survey will be traditional undergrad students from Northwest Christian University.

Sleep Acquired by College Students

This report analyzes data collected on the sleep acquired by college students, specifically NCU undergraduate students. The data collected is a result of research conducted online though Survey Monkey and data collected by other researchers to be used for comparison. The data collected about NCU students will be analyzed next to a national average to see where NCU students fall in comparison. This report will also analyze where NCU students fall in comparison to the amount of sleep needed according to the National Sleep Foundation.
