Second Grade Mathematics: Working with 100

This is a second grade mathematics unit focusing on number sense, place value, addition and subtraction within 100, and applying these concepts to money and coin values. Students will participate in a number of interactive games to build their number fluency and engage their critical thinking skills. Students will also create projects that emphasize the structure and sequence of numbers in the base-ten system. These skills will enable students to build a foundation for multiplication and division operations later in third grade.

Anne Frank: No Longer a Bystander

My work sample is about the diary of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis for two years. The unit teaches students about the Holocaust and modern day social injustice. As a class, we discuss ways to create tolerance and help others. The unit culminates with a service project where the students actively work to make the school a more tolerant place.

Seventh Grade Language Arts

This is a sample of a three week unit that I taught at the 7th grade Language arts level. In this binder you will find five sections. The first section encompasses student data, a description of my unit, and the lessons I taught. In the second section you will find the rules and procedures for this classroom as well as my management plan and strategies. The third section will show you how I plan to assess the students’ achievement growth. Evaluating student progress in what the fourth section is all about student learning. The fifth second encompasses my professional behavior.

Second Grade Plants

Students participating in this second grade plant unit were encouraged to make independent discoveries and presented with many opportunities for hands on inquire. Students were able to observe, predict and record data on regular bases in order to familiarize themselves with these practices. Students were able to incorporate scientific discoveries with literature and art in order to learn about plants in a more complete structure. Students who took part in this unit were graded based on growth and individual performance as well as expectations.

The Great Depression

The Great Depression was a period within U.S. History in which Americans struggled to make ends meet and get back on their feet. It was a time in which socialism became a very attractive outlook on life. In a three week unit focused on America’s struggle through the Great Depression, students were able to be highly creative in their learning and application of key concepts. Students were able to see how different groups in America fought through and experienced the Great Depression. The highlight of the unit was for students engage in The Great Depression Project. Students worked in groups to create a Great Depression meal, fashion, game a family would play, Hobo symbol sign, and their own Hooverville.

Investigating the Human Body

The body is a complex system that works together to allow the body to function properly and efficiently. The body has an incredible ability to heal itself after breaking bones. It uses voluntary and involuntary muscles that are intertwined with nerves that connect to the brain. With the involuntary action of breathing, blood is filtered through the heart. Alongside these systems the body is able fight off diseases and work efficiently without many organs. Fifth grade students will expand their knowledge about these topics during a fifteen lesson intensive unit.

Today, teachers must be “highly qualified” to be considered for any teaching position in public education. What does it mean to be “highly qualified”? Who decides if you are fit for teaching in public school? What evidence is there of their decision? This presentation brings to light the importance of a senior work samples as evidence of the high qualification of prospective teachers, as well as some of the do’s and don’ts of work sample creation.

Third Grade Social Studies

This work sample details a Social Studies unit taught to a third grade classroom of 34 students. The unit discussed the topics of Slavery and Civil Rights in the United Sates. It was a two month long series. The unit was designed to be taught to the whole class and is not based on a curriculum. There were topics to cover along with potential materials to use, with the lessons created from there. The cooperating teacher reviewed the lessons, and advised on pacing as well as how to present the material. There were multiple learning styles incorporated in the lessons.

My major work sample is a 14 lesson unit at the high school level on exponents and exponential functions. We discuss multiplication and division properties, negative and zero exponents, graphing of functions, scientific notation, and exponential growth and decay.

Minor Work Sample—Solar System

In this unit, students will be learning about the objects in our solar system: the Sun, the terrestrial planets, the gas giants, the asteroid belt, and the Kuiper belt. They will learn facts about each of the planets, like how big they are and their composition, and record them in the science notebooks they will make. Students will be learning about the order of the planets from the Sun out to the Kuiper belt. They will also be learning about the importance of gravity to keep the planets orbiting around the Sun.

The Rise of Islam and the Islamic Empires

This work sample was taught in my minor placement at Harrisburg Middle School. The unit includes 11 lessons in which students were engaged in many group learning activities and projects as well as different teaching strategies that address different learning styles. This unit was taught to a 7th grade social studies class that first learned of Islam as a religion, then they learned of Islamic empires and their achievements.

Inside the Human Body

In this unit of study, students will expand their knowledge about human body systems and how they work. During the course of this unit of study students will learn the basic parts of these systems: skeletal, muscular, respiratory, circulatory, nervous, and digestive. Students will be involved in this unit for up to three weeks. At the conclusion of the units students should be able to understand the basic concepts of human body systems and how they work together.

Minor Work Sample—Grammar

As a part of the student teaching program of NCU, I created a work sample of twelve lessons that I taught to a fifth grade class. These lessons were part of one grammar unit that introduced conjunctions and compound and complex sentences to the students. Along with each lesson plan and the materials required, my work sample also includes assessments of the students, the standards to be met by the students in each lesson, important information about the school environment, and several pieces of reflection on my own teaching experiences during the work sample.
