The Winning Edge

For our project, we will determine whether the turnover to shot ratio can determine the outcome of a game. We will obtain our data from the GoBeacons website. We will be using both the men’s and the women’s game stats from all the years available for our data. For each individual game we will determine the number of shots and divide it by the number of turnovers. After obtaining this number, we will constructs a histogram that will show the shape of the distribution. After determining the mean, standard deviation, and median we will conduct a hypothesis test to determine if a certain shot to turnover ratio determines a win.

The Silence of Miscarriage Loss

A miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy at 20-weeks of pregnancy or sooner. This type of loss is painful and real. This type of loss is legitimate. This type of loss is marginalized by social groups we belong to (i.e. churches and clubs), family and friends, and the medical community. I will be examining the importance of the role that each of these groups plays in the grief process. Through a survey, I will also be documenting and bringing to light some of the associated negative feelings women go through with this type of loss drawing a comparison to the “5-stages of grief” Kubler-Ross model. There is silence surrounding this issue that is deafening to the women who go through it.

Main Reason for Choosing to Attend NCU

Because I attend this university, I am interested in acquiring information about students that go here. I am interested in finding out why students chose to come to this university in particular (sports, location, scholarships, career choice, religious affiliation, tuition, size of school). I also want to see if there are demographics (age, gender, major, marital status, transportation) which have an influence on this decision.

While looking at the professional athletes related to snowboarding, I will be focusing on the Olympics with my ultimate goal being to conclude which country is statistically the best in this particular sport. I will gather information on each of the top finishers, and, through data analysis and statistical inference, come to my conclusion.

Should NCU Have a Cheerleading Squad?

For this project the goal is to illustrate if the NCU student population would be in favor of having a cheerleading squad for the school. The aim is to use demographics of gender and grade to display the results. Surveys will be voluntarily taken during different classes all occurring at the same time to avoid repeat results. The results will be displayed in several different ways emphasizing the different demographics.

Student Use of NCU’s Kellenberger Library Over a Defined Period of Time

I chose to study the number of students that use the Kellenberger Library over a period of time. I intend to focus on seeing if there is a large influx of student use as we approach final exams. During my daily shift as a student worker I collected the data needed for my project and also noted if the patron was a traditional undergraduate student or a graduate student. I will continue to track the number of students up through the first week of December. Once my data has been collected I will analyze it to see if there are any noticeable trends.

The Relationship Between Eating Habits and the Effects on the Body

I will be conducting a research project on my personal eating habits and the effects it has on my body. I will be the only person in the particular research project. The data will be collected over one week and will look into: (1) did I eat breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner; (2) how many times a day I ate; (3) how much in ounces did I drink; (4)what did I drink; (5) if I skipped a meal, what was the reason for not eating; and (6) what affects all of this has on my body and my brain.

Construction of a Simple Securities Market Model

The securities market includes stocks and bonds, but also many more less common types of securities. This presentation will introduce viewers to the basics of the market, including risk and the no-arbitrage principle. This principle requires that no risk-free investments with a guarantee of gain can be made, and once it is assumed to be true, many other facts and interesting truths can be derived. The presentation will explore this in more depth, and provide an equation for determining the future value of investments.

Study Habits: Time is Money

This project will be based on a survey of students in several lower-level general education courses. Students will consist mostly of college freshmen and sophomores. The study will include questions concerning age, gender, high school GPA, current GPA (if known), average homework time per week and per class, and a self-evaluation of efficiency as a student overall (scale 1-9). It will seek to confirm (with 95% confidence) the hypothesis that there is a direct correlation between the amount of time a student spends studying outside of class and both their self-efficacy and current (or high school) GPA.

Assessment in Math Education

Many times in Math education, the assessment used tells teachers and students too little, and too late, how well students are understanding material. There is a push now for alternative assessment which emphasizes deep learning strategies, as opposed to solely recognition or recall. The ideal form of assessment promotes students’ best performance across time and uses a range of methods.

Uncovering the Truth Behind ‘Drive for Show, Putt for Dough’: A Statistical Study of the Game of Golf.

For my project, I plan to research the Professional Golf Association (PGA). I plan to try to uncover the answer to the question: what statistics really matter and are the most important to focus on, or is there truth behind the famous statement “Drive for show, Putt for Dough?” In trying to uncover which set of statistics really help in a player’s performance, I will be able to offer points in every golfer’s game, where if they practiced more in these areas, they will have a statistically better chance at success in the game.

Shooting Percentages for the Anaheim Ducks Hockey Team

I will examine the Ducks’ shooting percentages of previous years and compare them to the shooting percentages of this 2011 NHL season. Also, I will use descriptive statistics to discover if the team has a better shooting percentages when playing their games at an opponent’s ice rink or at their home ice rink. From this research, I will have a greater change of accurately predicting whether or not the hockey team will win on the road or at their home ice rink.

Sales Analysis for Obscene Offroad and Fabrication

This is an analysis of financial information generated from the business Obscene Offroad and Fabrication. The services offered by this business included automotive, boat, and utility vehicle repair and fabrication. The company was in operation from 2006 through 2008 and had just become successful when the economy began to decline. One aspect to be analyzed is the parts versus labor sales and their effect on each other. Another analysis will include the cost and methods of advertising and its relationship to the sales figures.

A Study on Golf Physics

The sport of golf involves many actions that can be analyzed using the mathematical properties of physics. Studies have been conducted regarding the nature of a golf ball in flight, the properties of golf clubs, and the mechanics of a golf swing. This capstone will survey some of the research on golf ball design with regard to general goals of minimization of draft, reaction to compression, and the maximization of spin. In addition, this capstone will investigate the physical dynamics of the golf swing and the golf club, with a goal of optimizing performance.

Effective Methods of Teaching Mathematics

Mathematics is widely known as one of the most difficult subjects to learn. Imagine teaching it! I am a math major and have been through many classes in my education career. Through my own experiences and through that of many resources I have developed a presentation/paper and poster to help you understand how effective, successful, and happy math instructors teach, guide, and help their students through the highest levels of achievement.
