The State of Teaching at Bushnell University

In the Fall 2021 term, a call went out for nominations of Bushnell students in the daytime TUG program who had demonstrated by their observable behaviors that they were committed to approaching their classes as opportunities to learn, not simply to manipulate the class environment for high grades or other indirect rewards. Those nominees were named the inaugural class of Bergquist Laureates. The award is named for Dr. Tim Bergquist, the founder of ACE Day, who loved to encourage students to be scholars. At noon, the Bergquist Laureates will participate in a panel whose topic is the elements of Bushnell classes that help them learn, things that do not help them learn, and things they wish they would see that would help them learn. Bushnell faculty are invited to attend to listen.

The panelists:

  • Jared Dodson
  • Daniel Gerlach
  • Jacob Lilley
  • Kalani Miller
  • Samantha Mueller
  • Taylor Quirk
  • Jordyn Ramos
  • Alessia Righi
  • Emmalee Rusk

Engaging Polarization With Peacemaking Tactics and the Teachings of Jesus

We live in some of the most polarized times in our nation; but how do we make productive steps to change this? As followers of Jesus, I believe we are supposed to be the light of the world by being peacemakers. In an effort to bring communication tactics and the scripture to guide us on how to do this, I made a short, five-episode podcast series called “Peacemaking In Our Time” as my capstone project. Come check out my presentation on the discussion of how this project went, what I learned, and how we can make strides in navigating our conflicts and differences. The Environments of Public and University Libraries and their Implications on Study Spaces

Many people understand that libraries are intended to be subdued, tranquil places of study, but how do the physical building and its design choices influence how we communicate in these spaces? In an exploratory study, we set out to determine the differences between the UofO Knight Library and the Eugene Public Library as two unique study/learning environments and observed the environmental factors and their effects on interpersonal communication in these spaces. From our observations, we learned there are several notable differences between the design choices of the university and the public library buildings that impact how people interact. These findings are significant as they have implications on how we construct our study spaces here at Bushnell in addition to any designs for quiet learning spaces in the future.

COVID-19 Research Term Project

Getting communities to comply to COVID-19 restrictions often times requires effective persuasive appeals. By studying the communication of leadership at two American colleges, Purdue University and Indiana University of Bloomington, we came to a greater understanding as to what works and what doesn’t work when crafting persuasive messages that can be helpful in not only this pandemic but for effective communication in future disasters as well.

“The Subtle Eccentric” Public Relations Application in the Field

Upon learning how to manage crises, implement social research and corporate ethics, build the reputations of clients and organizations, understand global social media trends, and develop a company’s mission, goals, and strategic communication plans, I got to apply my knowledge directly in the field to my brother’s clothing design company, The Subtle Eccentric. This process led to some groundbreaking results and helped the new enterprise start off on the right foot.

Competitive versus. Collaborative Listening

In order to discover which is more powerful, speaking or listening, Daniel Gerlach and Doyle Srader are implimenting two studies to determine people’s perceptions of listening and speaking and determine in debate which is the more strategic behavior, attempting to counteract the general belief that listening is weaker than speaking and that listening can be considered as competitive just as much as it can be collaborative.

What You See Is Not Always What You Get: The Expanding Impact of Visual Media in Today’s Culture

Technology is becoming more and more accessible in our culture. We are capable of allowing it to help or hinder our growth. In this panel, students will explore some of the ways technology challenges human development, relationships, and fulfillment. Sera Tyrell argues that pornography is harmful, and, from a Biblical perspective, we were made for so much more relationally and sexually than what the porn industry portrays. Jake Miller argues that the Internet needs to be made safe, but no matter how safe it gets, it will always be a temptation for young minds. Daniel Gerlach explores how video games fulfill certain human needs, yet, as gaming and simulation technology advance, video games are going to become even more engaging and addicting; we need to set a balance and limit future virtual reality systems from providing alternate realities or there will be a missing generation of people; the film Ready Player One is becoming more attainable each year. Finally, Ben Womack looks at how military based virtual reality therapy can help to alleviate post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans.
