A Law of Love: The Use of ἐντολή in the New Testament

I will present a basic word study of the use of ἐντολή in the New Testament. Then, I will break down the Old and New Testament separately to analyze where it is most used in each and what that can teach us. Finally, I will conclude with some theological and practical applications.

The New Testament Usage of πνεῦμα for the Holy Spirit and Textual Parallels with the Old Testament- A Lexical Study

The New Testament deals with the activity of God’s Spirit (literally “the Breath of God”) more frequently than the Old Testament. The student of the Spirit is inevitably led to ask, “Where did the New Testament authors get their understanding of the Holy Spirit?” Jesus speaks comparatively infrequently about Him (as little as 6% of NT passages which mention the Spirit are on Jesus’ lips). Were the authors informed by teachings of Jesus which were left unrecorded? Was Paul illuminated on this topic while receiving visions in the third heaven? Or did they get their understanding of the Spirit primarily from the Old Testament? In other words, when comparing the use of “Spirit” in the New Testament with the Old, do we find more continuity or discontinuity? How much pneumatological innovation do we see by the apostles?

The hypothesis to be put to the test in this study is that, rather than fueled by fresh innovation in pneumatology, the understanding of the Holy Spirit by the apostles and New Testament authors is almost completely founded on the Old Testament material, which was then applied to the miraculous outworking of the Spirit which they saw occurring around them in the Church.

Agape Word Study

This presentation explores the meaning of the Greek word agape as it occurs throughout the New Testament. The presentation discusses the meaning of agape in ancient Greek, the Old Testament, and Judaism. This includes multiple words and interpretations in ancient Greek and both religious and secular understanding of agape in the Old Testament. It identifies the frequency in usage of the word by New Testament authors and the meaning of agape according to Jesus, John, and Paul. From studying these authors, the detailed comprehension of agape is applied to our lives in this presentation.

Todah as Communion

Communion is likely one of the most important things that many churches in the world today simply view as a quick practice that is more of an afterthought than something that is central to the life of the believer and the church. However, recapturing the authentic vision that Jesus had for the Eucharist is vital in understanding more fully the life that he wants us to participate in with him. In the church today, it is difficult to pin down exactly what communion is. While most people would agree that communion is the partaking of bread and the drinking of wine to remember what Jesus has done for us on the cross, the practical way that is played out in churches across the world looks drastically different everywhere.

How can we recapture the authentic vision for communion that Jesus undoubtedly had in mind when he instituted it as a practice in the upper room with the disciples in Matthew 26? In order to answer this question, we must look at three aspects of communion. First, we must look at the history of communion, not only in the church, but also in what Hebrew traditions Jesus implemented communion around. Secondly, we must look to the theology of what happened in the upper room when Jesus instituted communion to understand what Jesus intended for communion to look like in practice for his followers. Thirdly, we must take what we learned from the history and theology of communion to know how to successfully integrate it into the practice of church today.

Missionary Kid Kingdom Refugees

Spiritually, I will focus on Acts 17 and Paul dealing with Greek culture as an outsider, that God can be found within all cultures but all cultures have idols they need to turn from, even the United States. Missionary kids, even if they are now “non-believers,” are well versed in the Bible and its expectations, and should be put to work in getting the American Church on simply following Christ again and not cultural influences.

Uganda – Education and Orphans

In my capstone I went into detail about the need for education and the lack of resources orphans in Mukono, Uganda have. I will present my idea to provide relief for this growing dilemma in Uganda. I will discuss funding solutions, staffing problems, and logistics for a grassroots organization to start in Uganda. I will also share a personal story about my experience in Uganda and explain how that helps me understand the needs of the Mukono people a little better. I won’t attempt to solve all Uganda’s problems, just propose ideas to help.

Child Abuse Today and the Obligation of the Church

Child abuse is a big issue in the United States and is more apparent to observers today more than ever. In this paper I intend to focus on the church’s obligation to a child who has been abused or is at risk of abuse. Hopefully this research will enable me (as a Children’s Pastor) and others to help a child in need.

Evangelism: Relating to the World we live in and Telling it about Jesus

The message of Jesus is extremely important. However, this message has been reduced to quick Bible tracts we can hand out to people we don’t want to talk to or catchy billboards on the side of the highway. Examining the culture of this generation tells the importance of being a friend who cares about spiritual matters, and how the church should be present outside of its four walls.

Saving Today’s Teens from Self-harm

My capstone project is going to be on the importance of helping teenagers that self-harm themselves. I am also going to be backing up my paper by what God says in the Bible about how we should treat our bodies. I am going to be showing the steps and how to understand how young teens start the pattern of “self-harm.” The information is going to show you how and why teens start to injure themselves. These steps will identify in the preventative opportunities to help the teenager who is going through with “self-harm.”
