The Great Depression

The Great Depression was a period within U.S. History in which Americans struggled to make ends meet and get back on their feet. It was a time in which socialism became a very attractive outlook on life. In a three week unit focused on America’s struggle through the Great Depression, students were able to be highly creative in their learning and application of key concepts. Students were able to see how different groups in America fought through and experienced the Great Depression. The highlight of the unit was for students engage in The Great Depression Project. Students worked in groups to create a Great Depression meal, fashion, game a family would play, Hobo symbol sign, and their own Hooverville.

Conflict Intervention Change through the Developmental Stages

The basis of my research is to examine conflict resolution patterns among elementary, middle and high school aged children. There are a variety of ways that conflict is dealt with positively as well as negatively among these different age groups. Through my research I aim to identify ways in which conflict is dealt with correctly as well as ways it may be improved.

Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict

The Arab-Israeli conflict has been going on for nearly a century, with tensions continuing to build today. I will be presenting my research on the Origins of this conflict, giving a better understanding of why present day tensions are so high between Arabs and Israelis. I will be taking an depth look at key events from 1880 to1914, which created the tensions we see today.

Investigating the Human Body

The body is a complex system that works together to allow the body to function properly and efficiently. The body has an incredible ability to heal itself after breaking bones. It uses voluntary and involuntary muscles that are intertwined with nerves that connect to the brain. With the involuntary action of breathing, blood is filtered through the heart. Alongside these systems the body is able fight off diseases and work efficiently without many organs. Fifth grade students will expand their knowledge about these topics during a fifteen lesson intensive unit.

Effective Transitions in the Classroom

This presentation explains how to effectively use transitions to manage the classroom. The three transitions that will be discussed include music transitions, verbal cues and visual cues. Our conclusion is that more than one mode of signaling a transition is most effective.

Today, teachers must be “highly qualified” to be considered for any teaching position in public education. What does it mean to be “highly qualified”? Who decides if you are fit for teaching in public school? What evidence is there of their decision? This presentation brings to light the importance of a senior work samples as evidence of the high qualification of prospective teachers, as well as some of the do’s and don’ts of work sample creation.

The Effects of Art on Religious Belief

The present study looks at how photos of art can affect the initial response to a question asking about the existence of God. It was designed after a study performed by William Gervais and Ara Norenzayan in the year 2012. The study consisted of Northwest Christian University (NCU) students. The participants were asked to look at the photo and report on Gods existence.

Third Grade Social Studies

This work sample details a Social Studies unit taught to a third grade classroom of 34 students. The unit discussed the topics of Slavery and Civil Rights in the United Sates. It was a two month long series. The unit was designed to be taught to the whole class and is not based on a curriculum. There were topics to cover along with potential materials to use, with the lessons created from there. The cooperating teacher reviewed the lessons, and advised on pacing as well as how to present the material. There were multiple learning styles incorporated in the lessons.

The focus of my project was on sex offenders and busting the myths that people hold about them that put them and their loved ones in danger. My project describes the characteristics of a sex offender, the type of victims they look for, the process of prosecution if found guilty, and the numerous facilities around Eugene, Oregon that work together to help the victims.

This paper looks at the growing problem of premarital cohabitation and how it effects the subsequent marriages. A survey was performed concerning attitudes toward premarital cohabitation among the Northwest Christian University community. Results of this study will be discussed.

Comparing Classroom Management Strategies

When you walk into a school, it is filled with teachers and students of all ages. Each teacher has their own strategy when it comes to helping their students learn. We are both very different teachers but we can agree on one thing. Our student’s success means everything to us and we will do whatever it takes to get them to succeed. From Kindergarten to Fifth grade procedures and management strategies change. With this project we will show you the difference between a Kindergarten Class and a 3rd grade classroom. This also results in showing the difference between Lower Elementary and Upper Elementary classroom management.
