Transforming FYS: an Analysis of Other Institutions FYS Courses  

As institutions are becoming increasingly aware of the individual concerns of incoming students, higher education intends to find a way to make the transition smoother Danitz, Suvak, Orsillo (2016). Through this, First-Year Seminar courses have been implemented within different institutions in varying ways. Analyzing the research on three institutions’ First-Year Seminar courses, one might draw on the benefits of these programs for integration in such existing courses. For example, it has been suggested by Danitz, Suvak, Orsillo (2016), that in order to create the smoothest transition possible, one must first focus on how to interact with one another appropriately and in a helpful way. In response to the literature on First-Year success courses, recommendations for future First-Year Seminar courses at Northwest Christian University will be addressed.

Logic and Critical Thinking: Through the Lense of Forensics 

My presentation explores Logic and Critical Thinking, specifically the latter, in relation to Forensic Psychology. Critical Thinking can be defined by two separate types of reasoning, rational and rationalized reasoning. Forensic psychologists study the ways criminals use reasoning skills to rationalize their behavior to themselves and others.  Reasoning can also take the form of “rationality,” which involves following premises to a true conclusion. Forensic psychologists do this when they create profiles for criminals, attempting to rationally understand the rationalization processes of criminals in order to create patterns that assist in stopping them from committing more crimes in the future. Through my research into forensic psychology, I expose a tension in critical thinking: reasoning skills can be used both for truth-seeking and for justifying violent and immoral behavior.

Biodiversity Decline in the Great Barrier Reef 

This presentation reviews the biodiversity of organisms that dwell within the Great Barrier Reef, and analyzes how various human activities have been ushering a destructive wave against this complex ecosystem. As a result of the augmenting carbon levels in our atmosphere, overfishing procedures, and the addition of numerous toxic chemical substances and other pollutants, many species are being affected. As coral growth and development are inhibited, the natural homes, food sources, and breeding grounds of many aquatic creatures are being uprooted. In addition, many larger species, such as sea cucumbers, fish, and turtles, are facing draconian challenges due to overharvesting and pollution. Fortunately however, these conditions are not irremediable. By establishing a clean energy economy and imposing regulations regarding mismanaged fishing and toxic waste, the potential for the revival of this biome will again be attainable, eventually restoring the vibrancy of the Great Barrier Reef.

Genetic Effect on Common Diseases 

The management and treatment of different diseases can be directly related to the origin of the disease. Diseases that have strong genetic ties can be treated in different ways than disease that have no correlation to the genetics of a person. In this review we discuss the different variations of effects of genetics on phenotypic diseases in an organism as well as discuss possible ways for treatment of these diseases. We discuss how we can prevent the spread of diseases that are not genetically tied as well as upcoming technology that allows us to correct any genetic abnormalities that can cause diseases.

Comparing the effects of different classes of medication in the management of hypertension 

The diagnosis of hypertension is common and treatment is frequently viewed as very simple. Treating hypertension takes more than just lowering the blood pressure of an individual. There are comorbidities that affect and are affected by the treatment of hypertension: kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. In this review we discuss the different preferences of using either Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, Calcium Channel blockers, Beta Blockers, and Diuretics when managing hypertension with the use of medications. It appears that Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors were preferential to the management of kidney disease secondary to hypertension. Calcium channel blockers were additionally found to have an advantage with many cardiovascular diseases while beta blockers were also considered for cardiovascular issues including atrial fibrillation and tachycardia specifically. Beta blockers and Diuretics had minute differences in secondary management of cardiovascular disease and kidney disease when compared.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears in Female Athletes 

The knee is the largest and the most complex joint within the body, because of this, injury within this joint is a common occurrence. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a tough band of connective tissue that connects one bone to another. The ACL originates from the anterior intercondylar area of the tibia and extends to the lateral condyle of the femur. The ACL’s purpose is to keep the femur and the tibia from extending beyond their normal range. The ACL prevents anterior movement of the tibia as well as hyperextension from the knee. When injured, the ACL does not offer the stability that the knee joint needs for performance among athletes. When an athlete tears their ACL, the person may report hearing, as well as feeling a pop within their knee. Soon after an ACL is ruptured the knee swells. After some of the swelling goes down, individuals can usually walk on their knee but the joint feels unstable and may give out. Because of this, an ACL reconstruction surgery is needed in order to restore full stability to the knee joint and allow athletes to resume normal activities within their sport. The purpose of this review is to systematically look at some of the major risk factors associated with tearing the ACL in order to come to a conclusion on certain preventative measures that need to be taken by athletes in order to successfully lower the risk of an ACL tear.

‘Uncertainty was attached to everything he knew’: The Intergenerational Transmission of Functional Illiteracy
When the U.S. federal 2020 fiscal year budget was announced in March of 2019, the notice of an 11.4% cut in k-12 programs generated an uproar among educators, journalists, and news broadcasters (U.S. Department of Education, 2019, p. 119). Yet, little attention was given with respect for the 24.3% cut in Adult Basic and Literacy Education, as well as an identical 24.3% cut in English (Speakers of another Language) Literacy and Civics Education—of which equal a combined decrease of 48.6% in adult literacy programs (U.S. Department of Education, 2019, p. 120). Little effort has been made for the functionally illiterate parent. President Bill Clinton’s efforts to, “end welfare as we know it,” in 1996 sought to decrease the number of families on welfare rather than decrease the number of families living in deep poverty. With this reform came stringent welfare eligibility requirements and uncompromising General Educational Development assessments (GED) within Adult Basic Education programs (ABE). Meanwhile, within the past three years, there have been zero cutbacks in Career and Technical Education or Vocational and Adult Education grants—thus confining impoverished and illiterate citizens to careers within the manufacturing industry; such programs offer diminutive literacy education. Historically, welfare and adult education reforms have denied opportunities for low-literate and functionally illiterate adults. In thwarting one’s ability to read and write, the intergenerational transmission of functional illiteracy remains. To be clear, this thesis does not serve as a claim against the alleged ‘brokenness’ of the K-12 education system or welfare system. Rather, it serves to take part in the current body of literature—of which asserts the need for improvement within the adult education system.

Genesis 15: A Single Seed

The life of a plant is produced by what we know as the germination of a seed. From the single seed of one man, Abraham, came the Son of God. Dormant as man may view it—the descendants—the covenant God made with Abraham was eventually fulfilled a near 2,000 years later. This former infertile seed went on to germinate and produce a plant, which dropped seeds, creating more plants, generating more life; just like the stars, the life produced by this single seed was and is all too much to count. But it did not stop with the birth of Jesus. It had only begun at the cross. This nearly 4,000-year-old covenant carries on today.

Namibian Dreams for the American, German, & Native

In the spring of 2013, Eddy Alvin Fuller embarked on a trophy hunting expedition in Namibia. With him, he took his wife and a journal to record his experiences. With the rise of veganism and the boom of exposing poachers through social media, big-game hunting has been frowned upon—especially in Southern Africa. Some may see it as heinous for an outsider—specifically a white man—to hunt on someone’s land and shoot their animals for hobby. However, many are unaware that the hunting “export” has many benefits for locals. In Namibia, many locals work as trackers, skimmers, and packagers. Also, meat is used to feed nearby villages. These journal entries, along with an examination of the colonized Namibian culture, and a brief analysis of the modern hunting culture in Namibia will prove to have both positive and negative affects on the state of Namibia.

Grammar Instruction in High School

In many of today’s high schools, grammar instruction is not a part of the English Language Arts curriculum. Much of the focus is placed on expanding reading and writing skills in preparation for college, rather than readdressing or expanding grammar skills. The main reason for this focus is that school authorities believe that most students should have learned about grammar while in elementary school or possibly middle school. Regardless of what the previous model of the public education system looks like, is grammar instruction at the high school level conducive for high school and college success? If it is, then there should be no question on whether it should be implemented at the high school level or not. If it is not, then we may keep to our old ways. This question can be answered by looking at what research says about grammar instruction and adolescent learning, some case studies, two grammar instruction surveys, and a few interviews with students and teachers.

CRISPR

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, Crispr for short is a dna sequence that can be used by the cas9 system of rna guided nucleases that effectively cleaves the section of dna containing a specific genome to repair or alter that specified genome. The crispr system is an adaptive immune system that is used and regulated by microbes and cells to defend against foreign substances and viruses by recognizing and eliminating the specific dna sequence associated with that virus. Most crispr systems contain 20-24 regularly spaced palindromic bases separated by spacers. The crispr cassettes are found in almost every archeon and almost half of bacteria studied. This provides a wide range of uses for the cas9 system and adds to the versatility of the system. We can use this system to replicate and code for specific genomes in animals and further understand how their traits are coded and replicated, we can create complex models for human inherited diseases or cancers, it can also be used to pinpoint the cause for underlying genetic processes by genome wide screening of the dna in any human cell. The origin of crispr however is the most intriguing aspect of the system. Being a biological system that was discovered and not a human engineered system, the origin is not entirely clear.

The Heresy Gospel: A Comparison of the Gnostic Gospels to the Synoptic Gospels

72 years ago, two Egyptian brothers found 13 leather bound books of parchment in a clay pot deep in a cave along the Nile. Not only were these books an amazing find, they came with a long and controversial history. In the early days of the Church, our Church Fathers had to struggle with what carried Christ’s true message and what didn’t. One of the dangers they had to face were found in these bound volumes that preached a different Christ while promoting the highly valued principles of sophia (wisdom) and gnosis (knowledge). When they accepted the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as John, they created the Church’s official canon. Together we will look at the Gnostic Gospels and ask ourselves the questions: what is it about the Gnostic Gospels that are so compelling? And why were they rejected while the Synoptic Gospels became canon?

Musical Influences in Middle Earth

When J.R.R. Tolkien created Middle Earth in his book The Hobbit, he was influenced by previous literary, musical works. Tolkien was a scholar of the epic Beowulf and used this tale to influence his famous story. He was also influenced by The Song of Nibelungs and other Norse and Germanic sagas. When Tolkien was a young man, before he started writing The Hobbit, Richard Wagner and his opera, The Ring of Nibelung, was very popular in Europe. There are many similarities between Wagner and Tolkien’s works, but Tolkien claims that “both rings were round, and there the resemblance ceases.” This presentation will be exploring the musical influences that Tolkien drew from to create his stories in Middle Earth, as well as look at the similarities between Wagner’s opera and Tolkien’s books.

The season of Lent ends with the Triduum, a period of three days that represent the journey Jesus took into his crucifixion and resurrection.  These three days include Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.  Most church populations know what Good Friday and Easter Sunday are, but in today’s churches most of the population does not know what Maundy Thursday is.  Maundy Thursday is a day for us to remember the new commandment of love that Jesus gave to his disciples as he washed their feet in John 13, and therefore a new commandment of love that he gives to each of us.  How can we take this new commandment of love and represent it in our daily walk with God?

Nonverbal Communication in Worship Band Settings

When worship bands play live, they need to communicate in order to make the music as fluent and flawless as possible. Verbal communication is limited if not absent during a live set, therefore band members must communicate non-verbally. Rehearsal times are essential to achieving a fluent live set. It is beneficial to have more than one rehearsal before playing live. Rehearsals are the place to coordinate song road map and dynamics which are managed through corrective and expressive behaviors primarily displayed by the band leader. The first rehearsal is the coordination stage, the second rehearsal is the dress rehearsal and finally, the culmination of events, the live performance.

Bloom: A Short Story of Poverty and Identity

My name is Gabrielle, and I am a product of the so-called “American Dream.” I was born of an uneducated family, and I am first of that line to break the chain of teen pregnancy. More importantly, I am the first to attend college. My paternal grandfather passed away when my father was just seven. Being the oldest, my father was forced to drop out of the third grade and support his mother and siblings. And then, when he was fourteen, he left his ranch-house in Tamazula de Gordiano, Jalisco, Mexico, to “make something of himself” by migrating to America.

But it was not until recently that I began to wonder what my life would look like had my grandfather lived. These thoughts are futile, but I can’t help but wonder: would my own father still be illiterate? And if not, would he still have entered America under the same conditions, and would I have found reason to write this? Would my parents have met? It is through this story, my father’s story— a deeply rooted bloom of self discovery— that I hope to put these thoughts to rest.

Kulturkampf: Before Bonhoeffer there was Bismark

In the relentless march of Secularization, America is hardly the first. From the attempted de-Christianization of France to the persecutions in Eastern Europe, complete separation of the Church from the State has been the dogma of the world. None had the same dramatic effect than that of Kulturkampf in Germany. This dogma had a place in the heart of Otto von Bismark. This presentation will explore historical context of Kulturkampf and why Germany was on the verge of secularization; the background of Bismark with a study of his worldviews, religious tradition, etc. to explore why he attempted to remove Church influence from matters of State; the presentation will finally be concluded with analysis on how the events of Kulturkampf influenced the secularization of Germany during the rise of National Socialism.

To speak or Listen? Taking a second look at our attitudes toward listening. 

We are often given the choice to speak or listen in our daily communication. However, many people hold an implicit definition of listening that likely alters this decision. Due to this implicit idea people hold, there is a common idea that speaking is better suited for situations where any form of persuasion or debate is involved. Through our study, we set out to test if this is indeed a phenomenon. By using a questionnaire with varying situations, we hope to get a clearer picture on what exactly this implicit definition looks like.

We believe that in contrast to this implicit definition, listening is actually better suited than speaking in many situations that involve persuasion or debate. We plan on surveying a number of debate judges and asking if it was the better speakers, or the better listeners that won the given debate. We believe that the common consensus among judges will be that the better listeners won the debate. 

Using these two sets of data, we hope to explore and explain the role of listening in communication.

Relation Communication in Education Environments

Northwest Christian University is a small school in the middle of a college town. With a well-known University right next to NCU and another small college a few minutes away we aim to understand how NCU is different than other schools both small and large. With a smaller student body, NCU’s faculty and staff have the opportunity to work with each student personally and develop a relational closeness. NCU has a different approach to leadership than secular universities. With the geographical closeness of our school we also foster a denser social network. Mainstream universities aim for community, but large student populations make that hard to accomplish. Northwest Christian University isn’t the only school with a small student population, therefore what sets NCU apart from other small schools?

Being at a small school has many pros the cons are just as evident. A big issue with fostering a strong sense of community happens when students get so involved that there becomes a bubble around the school. When there is an in-group there is an out-group. With being close to a large university is a part of NCU’s identity how does NCU maintain their identity while maintaining balance? Students at NCU can be both immersed in the community at NCU, but if they become suffocated they can retreat to the University of Oregon with the simple crossing of a street. Northwest Christian University is mix of many great aspects of a small university and a large university.

Standing Strong

Even in times of tremendous trial, those throughout the Bible were able to stand strong in who they were and in who they knew God was. Jesus is the ultimate example of this, as He faced crucifixion and death, and He spent the time He had before this trial praying to His Father. Other examples of standing strong are Stephen (Acts 7), who was full of the Holy Spirit, Peter (Acts 12), who had the entire church body in constant prayer, and Paul and Silas (Acts 16), who spent their time in prison praying and singing. Standing strong in times of trial takes strength, but in the end, there is always an amazing outcome and reward for continuing in God’s plan.

I Am Peter

I have created an acrylic painting inspired by Matthew 14:22-27 through a prophetic vision. The artwork includes four separate canvases of different sizes. I desire each member of the audience to interpret their own meaning and apply the artwork to their own life, just as scripture serves as a means to strengthen one’s relationship with God. Therefore, I will not go into great lengths regarding my own interpretation. This is mainly due to the fact that I find my own perspective to change every time I view the piece. My interpretation of the scripture is from Peters own perspective as he views Jesus walking towards the disciples. As Jesus draws near, Peter is brought to life in the storm of his fragmented life, hence the four separate canvases. I have also included a separate portfolio of ten other artists and their rendition of the scripture. In this portfolio I have compared, contrasted, and analyzed each piece of art to my own to show different perspectives.

The Second Life of Sylvia Plath: A Loss of Identity

Sylvia Plath was a bright young poet who grew up in a low-class household. She was a 4.0 student and received a full ride merit scholarship at Smith College, but she later committed suicide at the age of 30. At the age of 19, she experienced a deep depression after returning from a summer internship at and being rejected from a summer writing course at Cambridge. Plath wrote The Bell Jar based on her feelings and inner thoughts while finding herself while experiencing a loss of identity. During her internship she meets three women who represent the different paths of which women were most likely to pursue during this era. Betsy represents the typical 1950’s woman; She represents the mother and housewife. Jay Cee, the editor of Ladies Day Magazine, represents the career woman. Doreen represents the gorgeous party animal who takes nothing seriously. During the uproar of the postmodern era and the second wave feminist movement, women were only able to pick one of these paths. Plath centers her loss of identity towards her desire to be both a career woman and a mother, which is characterized as an identity fragmentation. The third wave feminist movement, which took place during the 90’s, enabled women to have a dual identity. Moreover, advertisements and media have come a long way since Plath’s dead. There are multiple hypersexual examples of female celebrities who embrace their inner feminist by wearing risky clothing, thus showing a control of their life and body through their choice of clothing. However, by doing so they have objectified themselves to the sexual desires of men. As a society we have progressed regarding female empowerment, mainly with their ability to be and dress how they want. But we still have a long way to go with regard what Plath refers as men seeing women as sex objects. The Bell Jar has allowed many young women to relate to one another regarding identity fragmentation and self-discovery. A Debate Over the Individualism-Collectivism Dichotomy

We will be having a debate on the validity of the Individualism/Collectivism dichotomy. Individualism is can be described as actions/behaviors that are focused on one’s selfish interests. Collectivism can be described as actions/behaviors that focus on the group’s interests rather than the individual’s. This dichotomy has been used frequently since its creation to describe and understand cultural behaviors and intercultural interactions. However, many scholars have called the widespread use of this dichotomy into question.

How the invention of writing changed societies and the way people think.

In CM 345: Orality, we take a deeper look into communicating the Gospel and telling Biblical stories in specific ways to reach certain people groups. People lie along the lines of a primarily oral culture (listening and speaking) and a primarily literate culture (textual and print based). Many people have a very ethnocentric point of limiting their ability to reach further groups. Learning how people from both cultures think will allow one to adapt his/her thinking and presentation style to relate to the specific people group(s). Father Walter Ong’s book discusses how speech is the first communication and literacy comes after. In the past words had power and would resonate in the souls of the people and now printed writings are kept on shelves. Ong does not discredit textuality nor does he say it is negative, Ong simply discusses how the advancing and creation of writing has changed the way people in society think. Today, there are many societies that are heavily influenced by literate thinking, but are still rooted in oral processes. Specifically in the islands of Hawaii many natives speak a creole known as pidgin while writing is taught and required; as a child many stories were passed from person to person by word of mouth. I will be recreating and performing a story from the Bible in Hawaiian Pidgin English.

God’s Promises

God has given a promise to each and every person, whether in His word or specifically tailored to us individually. According to I John, God is love and God is good, therefore His promises are good and full of love as He is incapable of operating in anything other than love. We know that God’s promises are for us and not against us, as it states in Romans 8:31 that God, Himself, is for us and not against us. Throughout the word, we are shown time after time of God’s faithfulness and the faithfulness of His promises. God’s promises that He has given to each and every person are good, for us, and faithful. The deciding factor in whether we step into these promises is us. How do I talk about God’s promises, what are the words that I let out of my mouth?

How General Practitioners can Communicate with Patients who have Symptoms of Depression

People across the globe know that depression exists to some extent, but those who do have depression are still afraid to talk about it in public or to their general practitioner. Studies have shown that campaigns can be helpful to an individual if it addresses the problem to the individual’s close family or friends. Once the family or friend see’s the campaign and speaks to the individual while showing their concern, the individual might be moved enough to go see their general practitioner. To be able to help their patient, the general practitioner must be knowledgeable on how to speak to the patient about depression, and how to asses them effectively. The practitioner could ask their patient to take a survey that could help them diagnose the patient’s extent of depression and how to treat it effectively. This paper can help people on both sides of the conversation know how to give a positive feedback about depression.

Education Reform

This research project considered alternative options to traditional public school education for students. The research considered academic journals, government statistics and field-based observation from the EDUC 110, Foundations of Education class. The findings suggest there are many alternatives to traditional education that are positively benefiting student learning. Statistically many such non-traditional options are proving to beat traditional school methods, including state testing scores, high school graduate rates and success in college. The United States Education Department should continue to progressively evaluate and explore the difference found in such schools to better struggling and underperforming schools around the nation, for every child deserves the opportunity to have an award-winning education.

Technology Education Standards in Teacher Education Programs

This research project considered strategies and methods to foster excellence among teacher education candidates. The research considered scholarly journals and field-based observation from the EDUC 230, Technology for Teaching and Learning course. The findings suggest that effectively implementing ISTE standards with efficient classroom technology integration practices is necessary to inspire America’s youth and promote academic achievement. Therefore, teacher education programs should consider practical ways to address and support ISTE standards in K-12 classrooms.

Ethics in Accounting: Satyam

In the accounting discipline, accountants are often required to make ethical judgments which have material effects on their company. If decision-makers act unethically when creating financial documents, their actions can negatively affect the company’s image and success, its employees, and the company’s shareholders. This project addresses the actions of decisionmakers associated with Satyam Computer Services Limited. The Satyam scandal amounted to a billion dollar fraud which later earned it the nickname, India’s Enron. This is constructed as an interdisciplinary project, combining the perspectives of both Accounting and Ethics, and fulfills one of the honors requirement for PHL 210.

Societal Reliance upon Technology

I want to observe to see whether students, here at NCU, can go a certain amount of time without using their cell phones. I want to challenge the student body to try to refrain from using their cellular devices in order to show that society is too reliant upon technology and cannot manage without it. Depending on what information I gather, it will show whether NCU falls into the category of needing technology in order to continue a daily routine.
